Tai Shan farms is a small boutique farm nestled on the side of Mauna Loa Volcano on the Big Island of Hawai’i was established in 2006 by Don and Malia McNabb. In the Fall of 2016 Kevin Begemann purchased the farm and business from Don and Malia. Kevin, a real estate broker from Portland, Oregon was presented with the opportunity to purchase this amazing property and business while visiting the Big Island just looking for a vacation rental. After meeting Don and Malia at a farmer’s market, Kevin, was introduced to the opportunity of a lifetime and made the leap to buy the farm and business moving lock, stock and barrel to the island to be a farmer, bee keeper, and marketeer.
At 3000 feet elevation the farm adjacent to the Ka’u forest reserve, surrounded by an Ohi’a forest the farm is the perfect location to grow dragon fruit and raise bees. Tai Shan has 2 acres of dragon fruit cactus, citrus trees, coffee, banana, papaya, mac nuts with 12 bee hives that produce honey for our baked goods and our delicious honeys and honey mélanges. Tia Shan’s honey production is unique in that the hives are kept at the edge of our dragon fruit field, concentrating on the production of rare dragon fruit honey when the fields are in bloom.
