Tai Shan Farms is a boutique dragon fruit and bee farm nestled on the side of Mauna Loa Volcano on the Big Island of Hawai’i. First established in 2006 by Don and Malia McNabb, Tai Shan was purchased by Kevin Begemann, a real estate broker from Portland, Oregon in the Fall of 2016. Kevin had the good fortune of meeting Don and Malia at a farmer’s market while visiting Hawai’i in search of a vacation rental. After learning about the farm’s availability from the duo, Kevin made the leap and purchased Tai Shan Farms lock, stock, and barrel. He is now a happy farmer, bee keeper, and local businessman on the Island of Hawai’i.
Tai Shan Farms lies adjacent to the Ka’u Forest Reserve, surrounded by native Ohi’a trees. This location, along with its elevation at 3,000 feet, is ideal for growing dragon fruit and raising bees. With two acres of dragon fruit cacti, the farm is able to produce a wide range of dragon fruit-based goods, including jams, dressings, hot sauces, cocktail mixes, and more.
Just as important as our flora are the property’s twelve bee hives. These hives are kept at the perimeter of the dragon fruit field, ensuring that a rare dragon fruit honey is produced when the fields are in bloom. This honey goes into our delicious baked goods and honey mélanges.
We hope you enjoy exploring all the products Tai Shan Farms has to offer! Mahalo for your support!
